Living between garden and city

The promenade in Frauenfeld is located directly east of the old town of the cantonal capital. It was built between 1812 and 1816 in place of the demolished city wall and the refilled moat. The tree-lined street at this slightly elevated location is lined with representative buildings on the east side. In 2010 the area went to a community of investors who announced residential use at the excellent inner-city location and organised an architectural competition for this purpose.

History - inspiration and challenge alike

HRS had to take into consideration that several buildings on the plot were under protection when planning. The development concept resulting from a competition was inspired by these facts, the history and the character of the area; with two carefully placed new buildings, it accentuates the transition between the villa area and the representative urban space on the promenade, between garden and city. The residential park offers 2.5- to 5.5-room apartments and interprets the location in a new and contemporary way. With paving, gravel surfaces, isolated shrubs, park furniture and a pavilion, this outdoor space looks very urban indeed.

To the east, the new buildings together with the villa Zum roten Haus enclose a park. Attached to it is the botanical garden of the former cantonal school. It had become almost forgotten over the decades, but was rediscovered in the course of the realisation of the residential park with its exclusive stock of trees, so that its qualities now come to fruition once again.

Comfort heating and ventilation

The development fulfils Minergie standards. Each apartment is heated by underfloor heating. Comfort ventilation with heat recovery contributes to the positive energy balance. The freshly drawn outside air is distributed into the apartments via shafts.
